What I like about Dave’s message this morning is it was encouraging, meaty, and he realized he was just a brick in the wall today. He he did a great job pointing to Jesus in telling the men that God had other things to say to them through the other speakers today.

Why did you have to wait? I’m truly Reformed and love the teachings of Wesley, Clarke, Courson, Stanley, and lots of others who are not Calvinists. I just disagree with certain portions and points, but so what? I also love the teachings of John MacArthur and R.C. Sproul, even though they disagree over eschatology. For me the beauty of gifted Bible teachers is that I am exposed to the depths of Scripture from a variety of different angles. Even those points of disagreement force me to dive deeper into the Bible and study more, to solidifying, modifying, or sometimes abandoning previously held positions. Good teachers makes better students. So bravo to Dave for being faithful to the calling that the Lord gave him.
Bummer, didn’t know this was going on today. Just tuned in though. Somebody needs to tell the graphics guys that Don Stewart looks and sounds nothing like David Rosales. 🙂
One high point for me was Brian Brodersen labeling the emergent church’s liberal theology as one of the ten things attacking the church today. Amen and what a joy to hear a CC pastor make an unambiguous statement regarding the movement.
Matt S – There is no ambiguity in CC regarding the EC movement. The only ambiguity that exists in the movement is around how aggressive one needs to be about it. To me, the only time to deal with it is when it’s relevant to do so, which is almost never. To me, some go out of their way to talk about it and it isn’t necessary. All we (CC) need to do is teach the word expositionally, applicationally (new word?) and it will inoculate people to it, if they even encounter it.
I’ll gladly teach against those who deny the inerrancy and infallibility of scripture in the EC. I will also gladly teach against LHT authors who completely miss the boat. And I have done both. Let God be true and every man found a liar, if need be.
Calvary has always been very good about nailing extra-Biblical and non-Biblical teaching, but I withhold my endorsement from Brian because of the many disparaging remarks he has made about those who hold to Reformed Theology and about others who simply disagree on secondary and tertiary issues. It is fine to disagree, even strongly, but “Christianity with Jesus” and charges of heresy over non-essentials goes too far for me. If Calvinism is the horrible heresy that Brian seems to think, then they’d better remove any remaining MacArthur, Spurgeon, and A.W. Pink books from the Chapel Store and remove Alistair Begg from KWVE. And maybe James McDonald, too, since I’ve heard him quote Calvin, Edwards, and Charles Hodge in just one sermon.
It was an encouraging thing for me from Brodersen to say what he said. And I say this because I am someone who was also miffed about his “Christianity without Jesus” comment as well. I am a CC member who holds to Reformed theology – but nonetheless I was encouraged. I believe we can have our differences yet remain one body. I don’t want my walk to be defined as being a “Calvinist”. I myself noticed I was pushing people away by bashing them with Calvinism. Now I just have have joy in what God has done for me, I give Him glory and I know what I believe in regard to why and how salvation occurs and finishes. Now it’s just time to share the gospel with everyone I can 🙂

Thank you Corby! There are those who are part of the Emergent movement, such as Dan Kimball, that have have sound theology on the essentials.
