bob1,
These are despicable men …with large followings.
They make me sick and angry as well…
When I BRIEFLY attended Calvary Baptist Church in Minneapolis (John Piper’s old church), the precursor to these theobros were there…plain boring suits, facial hair, etc. I always thought there was an air of smugness about them.
Jim Crow theobros? Sounds like they missed the WHOLE of the Gospel and what it entails.
As someone who played college and semi pro football the hit wasn’t that bad in terms in terms of sportsmanship, heat of the moment and the sport is so fast paced you cannot pull back most of the time once you have launched. Now the celebration stuff is different. if they knew he was out and celebrated that’s not good but to be honest having played for many years players always celebrated after a big hit. I never even heard the word targeting when I played, it must be one of these new words used.
Read through the worship wars article. Some memories of my past evangelicalism came back to haunt me. I used to really like and appreciate Hillsongs music, but was always uncomfortable with how they marketed personalities on their CD covers. It was very obvious.
Dan,
I had the advantage of not liking the music…and the lifestyles of the creators repulsed me…
I wasn’t aware of the behind the scenes shenanigans until many years later.
The condemnation of empathy is form of alternative virtue signalling. An example of how such alternative virtue signalling looks is the social media message that Pete Hegseth posted the other day: “No fatties. No trannies. No beardos. No weirdos. No wimps. No radicals — JUST WARRIORS.” This is an example of bullying signaled as virtue; you can be sure that the man who posted it has been a bully all his life, thinks that leading is bullying, and as a loud self-proclaimed Christian would like us all to think that Jesus Christ approves of bullying, not empathy, as a virtue.
As a theologian, Rowan Williams is a great gift to the Church Universal. His venture into the See of Canterbury was a distraction from his vocation as Church theologian.
“God gave me a gift for violence” is a blasphemy. It’s something those who tortured nonbelievers back in the bad old days of Christendom said to themselves to justify their crimes as God-given vocation.
Robert F (3:36am) I agree that it is a form of virtue signaling.
I also see anti-empathy attitudes reflecting a “you and your feelings and your story don’t matter to us and to God” belief. Horrible.
Dan,
It is pretty telling when godless heathens of other religions and atheists show more compassion and empathy. They also exhibit and exemplify the Beatitudes better than the vast majority of “Christians”. To which one must ask, why should I become a Christian if it results in becoming an even bigger sanctimonious a-hole?
If that makes me a misanthrope towards Christianity, Christians in general, and other organized religion, so be it. Maybe I am like Diogenes with his lantern.
Ra,
I’m confused as to why you are here if you despise Christianity and Christians that much. I have met plenty y of Christians with compassion and atheists who are jerks, I know the reserve can be true too but it just seems like you are bitter
