Regarding the Orthodox article. “Split” is too strong a word for the time being.
We are members of the Russian church and therefore, the Moscow Patriarchate. Personally, my sympathies lie with the Ukrainians, based on my shallow knowledge of the situation. The Ukrainian situation is so incredibly complicated, and so remote from personal faith in Christ that I haven’t followed it too closely although some folks at my church are intensely interested. I would like to point out to the pro-Moscow folk that “Russian” Orthodoxy originated in Ukraine, not Moscow.
The article on Mormons burying sex abuse scandals reminded me of a series of articles the Philadelphia Inquirer did recently about the Jehovah Witnesses hiding abuse scandals: http://www2.philly.com/philly/news/jehovahs-witnesses-child-sex-abuse-protest-reading-chessa-manion-20180824.html
JW’s are more prominent in my part of the country than are Mormons. It all goes to show that the Christian Church isn’t unique in covering up their abuse scandals. It’s a sad reality of humans in their sin prioritizing the reputation and protection of their organization over helping those in need, protecting others from harm, and bringing about justice.
We know that we are just as much sinners as everybody else. But as Christians and the Church, we are also called to be the light of the world. Tough doing that sometimes with this thing called sin.
agree with Levertov … but was hoping to see John Donne in that last.
Xenia,
Indeed not a split… yet. This one, which came across the wires yesterday, just broke my heart, especially as Constantinople has been struggling for years.
Interesting read on Beth Moore. I’ve been out of “women’s ministry” culture for awhile, so hadn’t paid attention to her positions, but do agree with what is reflected in the article. The Tullian article is an apropos juxtaposition to the Moore article.
The Beth Moore and TT articles are like a mirrored reflection. However I don’t put Beth in the innocent victem category. She has made her millions and seems to play politics alot. Not sure she has done much to heal the gender divide between men and women either which seems to be the issue dejour.
I couldn’t have said it better that your link re: Tullian T. That was kind of my thinking when I saw his latest blather on Charisma. This guy NEEDS to get a non-ministry, non-in-charge-of-people job….he needs to take orders from a physical boss.
