VBS is grooming…interesting thought! I’m a veteran of many VBSs. A few years ago my church realized that we were providing childcare as parents would check church calendars and sign their kids up for all the VBS programs available in their area. Now we do something different-VBS in one night aimed at the families in our church. Parents are encouraged to attend with their kids, volunteer, and bring friends. We share the gospel and give parents tools to follow up with their kids at home. We start with family dinner, then rotate to story, craft, and game stations, ending with the gospel tie-in, fun songs and snack. It has been a hit, not so exhausting, and a great way to introduce new families to the church.
We also have park days in the summer. We schedule time in local parks, have games, songs, and a Bible story, playtime and snacks. People who are just “around” in the park can also participate. Last, a week-long 4-6 pm soccer camp in a local park that accepts sign-ups and walk-ons.
It’s more personal and family-centered, and we don’t hide the intention or the message. More folks have visited the church with these programs than we ever had with the VBS model.
