Read Knowing God as a new christian 30 years ago……a Calvary Chapel pastor gave it to me and said it was the best on the subject matter.Think I’m going to get another copy and read it again.

New Song…..When your local church becomes like the world.

    Thats Spring not song.

  8. Although New Spring may be over the top a little it isn’t that far off from what the churches of the Jesus Movement time were doing during their time or the Seeker Sensitive churches that followed. Change the music, change the dress code, chill out … for what purpose? to be more relevant to the non believers.

This generation is more “things” oriented – so give them “things” to get them to come to church.

It makes you wonder why previous generations didn’t do the same. I don’t think that my parents generation was demanding that churches change their worship style to Big Band worship and I doubt my grandparents generation clamored for Jazz Worship.

    Just my thought.

  9. I agree with Noelle, shameless indeed!
But, what can you expect from Perry Noble?
I thought about putting it on FB and showing people what a crock it was, but I figured at least half of them would sign up for the prizes.

New Spring’s website looks like a shopping centre’s website including a “win a trip” portion.

Didn’t Jesus turn over tables somewhere in the Bible?

The Driscoll matter becomes worse and worse, and not simply because of the plagiarism. The use of a research group for his messages and now books. So, when you are reading his book are you reading him or the researchers?

For some reason I do not have a strong desire to purchase one of his books. Who am I reading?

  13. I guess this is my point from a couple of days ago – why would anyone read a book by a ‘pastor’ today in the first place, when there are so many books written by actual academics and theologians?

At best, you get the warm fuzzies from these guys, because they are not capable of going any higher (perhaps the reader is not capable of higher things neither) – their books are just bastardizations of their sermons … which also leave you wanting.

    MLD:

I think I can answer this question:

“I guess this is my point from a couple of days ago – why would anyone read a book by a ‘pastor’ today in the first place, ”

They would for the same reason the go to a pastor for counseling, they are seeking a real world answer for their issues. The hope of reading a pastors book is they will apply what they learned from academics and theologians in a practical and understandable way. Additionally one would hope these men can also apply their experiences in life to the reader’s issues in a similar way.

Of course asking a 30 something man with equally as poor teachers to give the advise of a seasoned sage is probably asking a bit too much.

I had a pastor years ago who used to say, “If only people would read the bible as much as they read what others say about the bible my job would be a whole lot easier.” I listened!

  15. Solomon Rodriguez says:

why not just read the bible and get your answers from there?

  16. It’s odd that sometimes, famous people die in pairs (like Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett). So as soon as I heard that Mandela had died, one of my first thoughts was, “Hmm…I wonder how Dr. Billy is doing.”

They were born in the same year, interestingly enough.

  17. Jeff Sheckstein says:

Why do you people think that a church auctioning off a Kuerig coffee maker is “disgusting.” Since the church represents Christ, we should only offer ” our best.”Therefor, what I find disgusting is not that the church engages in an auction with its patrons, but that it doesn’t offer the finest coffee maker, like those incredible ones made in Italy and used by the finest baristas. Nothing smacks worse in the Body than legalism.

So basically, the reader of Driscoll’s books, are the real problem, not plagarism, ghostwriting, researchers, or whatever they decide is the problem on a given day.

These guys need to start owning their mistakes.

  20. You see, I should have realized from the beginning, that it was my fault.
Here I am idolizing the man and making him feel unrealistic expectations.
Thus, he has to prove himself super human and write insane amounts of material.
This forced him to employ a legion of ghostwriters and researchers, who don’t know diddly about attribution and thus plagarize.
    Yep, my bad y’all.

  21. “enter to win!”
Something you should never see on a church website!

    Michael-

Thank you for the link to the Missio Alliance posts concerning the theological vision of Dallas Willard. I was aware of the new book that summarized his theology.

Going to grab the book with a Kindle gift card. Willard has helped me greatly find a perspective that unites soteriology, anthropology and the missio dei in relationship with Christ as His soul apprentice.

  23. I loaned my copy of Knowing God out a couple of years ago and cant remember who I loaned it to….gonna have to purchase a new copy and reread.
