State of theology 2025: For me, the appeal of Christianity, when I reengaged with it in my twenties after rejecting the Roman Catholicism of my childhood, was the result of what I thought was the core moral vision it presented, a moral vision which honored the value of human persons and sought to serve and respect all human persons and their agency as persons. I saw this value of human persons as rooted in the humanity of Jesus, not in a set of rules to be followed, but in an ethic arising out of what D.B. Hart someplace called the fundamental esthetic shape of Jesus ethics in his dealing with human beings. Christian ethics is more like an improvised jazz piece than a codified classical composition; the overall development of the music still exists within real framework, shape and mood, but not one that describes in detail the sought-after outcome before it is arrived at. But today, in 2025, I’m not sure anymore that institutional Christianity of any kind can honor the image of God in persons, or end in a place that does honor it. The inhumanity of the political landscape in America right now, and the vast support that landscape has received from institutional Christianity and Christians, has disillusioned me. I’m beginning to think that not only will Christianity never put its money where its mouth is, but its mouth has become as foul as its inhumane deeds, both historical and present.
