It more and more looks like the current administration has gotten the U.S., and in fact the world, involved in another forever war that is having expanding negative effects on global economic health and the welfare of human beings around the world. From my viewpoint, the only thing good about this conflict is that it is de-centering the U.S. as the primary pole around which the whole world revolves, and bringing in a multi-polar global socioeconomic dispensation that will decrease American hegemony in a big way. It is good for America’s soul to lose dominating power and influence in the world.
Last summer I was sharing about my search for a new church home. By November we were between two churches: a Presbyterian (PCUSA) and a Disciples of Christ Church. One of my preferences was to be part of a church that would not be subsumed by MAGA, especially by stealth. Stealth would be church were nothing is said from the stage, but there are dog whistles and winking and nudging. What I really wanted was no politics at all.
The PCUSA church was politics free, and the teaching solid and worship a mix of hymns and contemporary. The congregation was mostly older than me, and I’m 65. Almost no people of color. Unless something changes, the attendance will drop from 200 to 100 in the next decade by aging out.
The Disciples of Christ Church was younger and more diverse. It was not politics free, vocally against DJT, but not in a disrespectful way. They are very much about social justice issues as you would expect. My wife and I had coffee with the Pastor and his wife, both in their 50s. They encouraged us to check out a small group in our neighborhood. They were studying a book by Marcus Borg that we would find intriguing. Marcus Borg taught that Jesus was just a remarkable man who achieved “Christ Consciousness” before he died. The Disciples of Christ are vehemently No Creeds, including Apostles, Nicene, etc.
It seems I’m more committed to creedal Christianity than I am anti-Trump, so PCUSA it is.
