The Weekend Word
Kate Bowler helped me this morning…
“Palm Sunday is…so intense. Jesus arrives at the place where he will be killed. He is celebrated with makeshift palm branches and soon he will be jeered. We do not know what to worship and to love. And suffering–Jesus’ suffering and the suffering of this nation–exposes the huge disparity between what we were SUPPOSED to love…and what we did.
The people suffering the most right now–health care warriors, hourly workers, the elderly and the fragile–are those we failed to care for. And this suffering makes everything so clear. Jesus’ suffering shows us all the cracks in how we are put together. And whose own self-sacrificial love reminds us to draw close to each other again. It’s the darkest week of the year. There is no denying that. But the love is real.”
