Things I Think…
1. I’m “celebrating” another trip around the sun…after this one I should just be grateful to be here…and I am…
2. I’ve been thinking about what I’ve learned after most of a lifetime in the church and 25 years online…and most of what I’ve learned has produced a deep cynicism…that I have to fight daily…
3. Institutions will often protect themselves before they protect the vulnerable. The true character of a church is revealed not in its statements of faith, but in how it treats those with the least power…
4. Power changes people—and unaccountable spiritual power changes them most of all. Wherever leaders cannot be questioned, abuse is only a matter of time…
5. The greatest damage to Christianity has often come from Christians themselves. Scandals, hypocrisy, cruelty, and the pursuit of political power have driven more people from the faith than intellectual doubt ever has…
6. Certainty can become an idol. The older I’ve become, the more comfortable I am with mystery, nuance, and the limits of my own understanding…I don’t know how much I don’t know…
7. The gospel is larger than the culture wars. When Christianity becomes primarily a vehicle for political identity, it ceases to look much like Jesus…
8. Faith survives best when it is centered on Christ rather than on personalities, denominations, or movements. Every human leader eventually disappoints us. Christ alone can bear the weight of our trust.
9. Hope is an act of discipleship. After twenty-five years of exposing darkness, I’ve learned that cynicism is easy. Hope—the stubborn belief that truth matters, repentance is possible, and Christ is still building his Church—is the harder and more faithful path…
10. Tell the truth, no matter what it costs…but count the cost. Silence protects abusers. Truth gives the wounded a chance to heal, even when telling it comes at great personal expense…
Last but not least…don’t listen to the cheers…those who cheer you today will crucify you tomorrow. Just stay faithful…

Happy Birthday
Stellar list
25 years of anything is BIG. This task would call for a lot of hazard pay.
Birthday blessings. Hope your day is filled with joy and peace.
Many blessings to you today Michael on your birthday!
Happy birthday, Michael and thank you for sharing all you have learned over the past decades!
Happy birthday, Michael. Your ministry and friendship has been a blessing to me for several years, and this website is still a part of me though I come and go nowadays. Enjoy your birthday and save some cake for yourself — I’m sure the pets will gobble up most of it 🙂
You mean we don’t need a plank that codifies our unwillingness to let women be fully part of the Body of Christ? Scandalous! 🙂
Happy birthday, Michael.
Happy CakeDay! 🎂
Happy Birthday, Michael!
Maligayang Bati
Thanks, Alan.
If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t…but I don’t think it was up to me…
Thanks, Nonnie…good to see you.
Thank, Dan…hope things are going better for you…
Thanks, Linn…you’ve helped make the last few years better..
Thanks, Brian D, no cake, but I might have a shot of bourbon to help me sleep… 🙂
filbertz,
That last Doug Wilson interview wanting to take away women’s right to vote is unreal…except it is real. Those people are dangerous…
Thanks, RobertF…glad you’re here…
Thanks, G-man…always good to see you here…
Thanks, mk…hope things are well with you, my friend…
JD,
Thanks…I think… 🙂
I hope you enjoy your shot of bourbon when you have it, Michael.
Happy birthday.
I’m late to this party. So happy day after your birthday, Michael. Bourbon? Not Kahlua?
Michael,
Happy Birthday!
Enjoy your shot of bourbon. I will toast you with my single malt.
Happy Brothday Michael – missed it by one day 🙂
Fun to see lots of old friends in the comments.
What’s your go to bourbon?
Thanks, WTH…glad you’re among us…
Thanks,CK!
Truth be told, I’ve been on pain medication so long I haven’t had much of either…but it’s getting better…
Ra’s al Ghul,
Thanks!
Josh,
Good to see you, my friend.
I’m a Buffalo Trace guy…
Its tougher to find Buffalo Trace here, but for a decent price it is quite good.
Michael, I definitely get that. I think I have about three drinks per year now. When I do have one (and only one), I usually skip a dose of my opioid.
CK,
I got a bottle of Buffalo Trace for Christmas…and haven’t cracked the seal yet.
However, my physical therapist is giving me hope that I will soon…just a taste… 🙂
I need to check out physical therapy again. I went a few years ago, and it was helpful. Had to stop though because even with insurance, I couldn’t afford it.
CK,
I hear that…I need to be going a couple times a week, but I have cats to feed…
Last time I had PT they re-injured my shoulder. Now, two years later, it is finally getting better on its own.
JD,
I’ve had bad experiences with PT…but this guy is giving me my life back…
Blessings Michael. Could still use prayer. Thanks much!
Dan ,you will have it…
thank you much Michael
