When I was in Colombia, one of the most dangerous professions was being a reporter. Yet, Colombia continues to have some of the strongest independent news outlets in Latin America. In the 90s, a television producer was murdered because he would not change his production values. Then, Diana Turbay, the daughter of a former president, was kidnapped. Much hope was held out for her release as the government and Pablo Escobar continued to bargain, but she was murdered when the Colombian armed forces tried to rescue her. This was in 1991. We don’t understand what happens in other countries because it hasn’t gotten that bad here-yet. I am very glad that Mr. Gutiérrez Soto was able to get his asylum plea granted.

And the difficulty of getting a hearing is why many people never even try to make those appointments. They take their chances on living in the immigrant population, working what jobs they can find and establishing a life for themselves. It’s so sad.
