Happy Independence Day!
When I worked in banking for a few years , one of my fellow employees was a devout Jehovah’s Witness.
I did not know this until I asked her once what she was doing for the 4th of July.
“I do not celebrate”, was her response…and she didn’t celebrate any holiday or even birthdays.
I heard that response hundreds of times over the years as it was a quick and polite way to dismiss such inquiries from customers and others.
“I do not celebrate”…
This morning there will be parades in little towns to the north and south of me.
The parade to the north of me will be traditional and patriotic, the event to the south will be anything but either.
I am geographically and intellectually stuck right in between both.
I’m staying home.
I do not celebrate…but I want to.
Perhaps someday my town will celebrate the best of what was, what still is, and what could be, if the extremes didn’t rule the times.
Until then, I’ll stay home with the cats and pray for reconciliation between the north and south…
My husband and I always combine the 4th of July, my youngest daughter’s birthday, and our wedding anniversary on Independence Day. We’ve been married 45 years!
We always go to neighboring Monterey’s parade, which is home-town sweet.
The illegal fireworks scare all the animals. Last night the neighbor’s large dog got so scared he jumped into our back yard (quite a feat as the gate is high) and scared our little dog. Poor pups.
God bless America!
Love to you all,
Xenia
My daughter gets to ride the fire truck in her city’s very patriotic annual 4th of July parade…. 2nd childhood. ? ? ?
Just experienced an earthquake here in the Los Angeles area. It was out near Barstow and registered 6.4. Quite a shaking but no damage.
Last night there was a 6.4 off the coast of British Columbia and there is an area off the coast of Bandon OR that’s been shaking pretty seriously for a week… Some serious shifting by “mother earth.” Stay safe down there, E
