This is a combination review of the newest Catholic study bible and an interview with one of the contributors.
All his reviews are worth watching if you’re as into study Bibles as I am…which I hope you’re not, because I’m a little odd.

He considers the birth of the internet up through AI to be like the Tower of Babel. With AI, not even its developers fully understand what they’ve created. They will admit its out of their control, but they have hope they can keep it reigned in.

I enjoyed the Andrew Peterson interview. I really like his music but have never read any of his writings.
I noticed toward the bottom was a link to another Russell Moore article. Something like It’s OK not to know what to think about Iran. Haven’t read it yet, but even that one statement is something I’d agree with.
I found “Is AI Demonic?” of concern, but I don’t think it will be leaving us in the near future. I have found it useful for generating a list of activities for my students, or a for designing a worksheet. Even with those simple activities, I’ve noticed mistakes. The reality is that all new forms of technology bring their own issues, and most of us eventually learn to live with them and use them properly. We’ll also need to develop rules, and maybe even laws with penalties, to control the negative aspects of AI. For example, the stories of people having emotional relationships with AI really bother me.

And let’s not even talk about cell phones. I work in a school where children aren’t allowed to have cells at the elementary level, and it makes a big difference. Our students carry on intelligent conversations and actually read books! It’s also a private school, no one is afraid of having their parents deported, and their parents understand the dangers of too much tech. Somehow we need to tame the monster we have created.
For many low-income kids cells are necessary to keep in touch with their parents, but they then take on a life of their own and influence their entire lives. If I had my own children, there would be no phone unitl middle school, and ti would be closely supervised.
AI is a tool just like any other. If at some point, an AI enabled robot asks for a “Phase Plasma Rife in the 40 Watt Range”, then I would worry.

Ra’s al Ghul-It’s just people make such poor decisions with technology! We lose a student or two each year from my school (in the middle/high school grades) for online bullying. Our kids should know better (we start “netiquette” in kindergarten), but they act on impulse and get themselves into trouble. I do enjoy a funny meme or a good post, but I’m careful and thoughtful when I put something up. I love technology! I can Facetime with my father struggling with dementia (he lives on the other side of the state) and do Bible study with Spanish-speaking women in a variety of countries. And, I have the privilege of leading one fo the groups! I also have a bunch of Facebook friends who were my students in South America 35 years ago. They friended me as soon as my profile went up in 2010. I love PowerPoint and Youtube videos for teaching, adn my students use an ebook.
I guess it’s like owning a car-reasonably safe until you put a drunk behind the wheel, turning the car into a lethal weapon. And some people never learn, even after the worst happens.
YOu might enjoy this funny bit-the language teachers in the middle/high school now require students to write all of their first essay drafts in pencil on paper so that they know they haven’t been generated by AI. They then take a picture of it, so that they can compare the original with the final product. So far, it’s working well, writing skills are up, and the kids complain a lot about their “nasty” teachers. Since I have 4th/5th graders, I’ve told them that if they submit anything that smells of AI, Google, or their Spanish-speaking nanny, they will need to do it over, ant they will not get an A. That is working well, too. I can’t believe I’m past retirement age and teaching with laptops and allowed to have a cell phone.
Linn, l really enjoy hearing about your teaching. You’re doing the Lord’s work.
And I would imagine that if your students are complaining of you nasty teachers, you’re doing it right!

I found DiscipleDojo last week, looking for reviews on study Bibles. Some I wanted to buy, some I had, some i was curious about. Between him and Tim Wildsmith I had most of my questions answered.
For example, I learned about the Baker Illustrated Study Bible and bought it on Amazon. I also learned the NIV Application Bible was nothing to write home about 🙂
My thoughts tend to agree with DiscipleDojo…I find him helpful.
