2 younger believers in my church asked how many times Christians have picked up firearms in self defense when facing violent persecution in the world and in history. Does anyone know?
I knew about the fall of Jerusalem in AD 70, where all the Christians fled to Pella (NOT an armed resistance), but couldn’t think of many examples.
I’ve consumed a lot of stuff from Voice of the Martyrs and it’s been amazing. But they sure don’t have the American 2nd Amendment bent…
You would have to look at the Crusades or the religious wars of the 16th and 17th centuries. These, however, were as much pan-national and national conflicts. Certainly there were martyrs, but these were not in the context of battle or self-defense… Martyrdom, at its heart, is an imitation of Christ and the cross, not who wins or loses in an armed conflict.
