Surprised but not surprised. I am seeing more and more poor spelling, and English grammar skills overall, creeping into publications, online (not shocked at all).

for how little I read, I actually have an extensive vocabulary…somehow I pick up on words easily. I know people shortcut the English language in texts, emails, etc, but it is inexcusable in publications, websites meant to bring in prospective students, customers, etc.
I emailed their IT person…when I make a mistake like that (and I have) I hear about it quickly…surprised no one has caught it.
Well, not very surprised… 🙂
One of the things I have to learn to cope with is that many people learn through alternative media now.
If I’m going to stay relevant, I have to use audio and video.
I just have to decide if I want to stay relevant…

I would think in your line of work one has to have an extensive technical vocabulary and great math skills.

Back in 2001 I took the GRE because I was thinking of Graduate School, and I scored higher in the verbal category than the analytical and quantitative categories. I do have math skills, but my career route took me away from Grad school and I don’t regret it.

You write really well…I would consider you highly literate no matter how much you read.
I have to accept that the new technologies have changed the way we learn…I try to keep up, but I’m still at my best with a book or 200…

When a people are no longer literate, it makes it easier for tyrants to arise.
As someone involved in marketing and publishing for 40 years, it not just the spelling. Widows, orphans, bad line breaks and clanky hyphenations are never caught. I’m sure most people are oblivious, but I miss when care was given to typography.
Another topic: We took our granddaughters (4 and 6) to see the CGI animated film “Migration” yesterday. Same producers as the Despicable Me / Minions films.
The movie was preceded by a Minions short that took place on the moon. With no explanation, a guy with just a bubble on his head for air is trying to catapult himself back to earth using his unexplainably stretchy arms as a slingshot. (Don’t attempt to make any sense of this). That doesn’t work, so he finds the old lunar rover, and tries to drive it off a cliff into space in the general direction of earth. When he fails at that attempt, he exclaims “Jesus Christ!” Big audience laugh. It hit me like a sick thud.
Nothing about the cartoon was entertaining. There were hints of Wiley Coyote and Daffy Duck in the character, but it was all copycat.
“Migration” starts. Duck family on a pond, and father duck is telling the baby ducks a bedtime story that is unnecessarily scary. Mother duck interrupts with “just a ducking minute here…”
I know this has been going on for decades (Roger Rabbit) but as a guy who hasn’t watched kids animated features much in the past 30 years, it was real off-putting. WB used to slip in things clearly kids wouldn’t get, but they weren’t this obvious, or lowbrow.
This was the worst year of my life. This is the worst Christmas of my life. I lost everything except my son. Literally, him, and the clothes on my back are all the things I have left. But it drove me back to Jesus.
