Can anyone explain to me how the video taken several days before the video of Alex Pretti’s execution by Border Patrol in any way exonerates the actions of the killers on that day? In fact, to my eyes it shows the habitual brutality of federal agents toward protestors and observers, as well as deportation targets. Pretti commits and act of vandalism against a ICE vehicle; he could rightly have been arrested. But he wasn’t arrested, no, he was set upon by 5 or 6 agents and beaten so badly that they broke one of his ribs. Pretti said of this incident that he expected to die that day. I’ve seen so many videos of protestors/observers/deportation targets being brutalized by Federal agents in the last week that it is astonishing how lawless our law officers have become. The earlier incident with Alex Pretti is just more evidence of habitual, blatant, and apparently undisciplined, brutality committed by ICE and CBP it is not evidence that “he had it coming.” There is little doubt that more people will be brutalized and killed in the coming days and months, because the brutalizers believe they are untouchable and can do anything the want. I don’t understand how anyone can come away from these videos of two different occasions of violence by federal officers against Alex Pretti with any different viewpoint. Can someone explain?
I’m Christian. I intend to continue being Christian, but if at some point I were to encounter incontrovertible proof that Christianity was a false religion because, say, irrefutable historical evidence had been found showing the New Testament was lying, and that Jesus was actually a rotten stinker who robbed people in his profession as a roadside bandit, I would stop being Christian, but I would continue being a theist. And I would continue believing that God was personal. I would become an agnostic theist, which is a descriptor I just learned today. That much of my religious belief is nonnegotiable.
We are far along the path to becoming a fascist state. If the midterms are tampered with by Trump & Co, as I fear they likely will be (I hear all the voices of very well-meaning people saying, “Oh, that can’t happen. The states are in control of elections within their borders. He couldn’t manage to fix elections not in his control,” and I immediately remember all the things those same voices said he could not possibly do that he subsequently did ), we will be beyond the point of no return.
Trump is shutting down the Kennedy Center for two years, during which it will be “rebuilt” according to his tawdry aesthetic. He wants to remake all of Washington DC in his own image. The Mad Emperor would like to remake the entire world in his own image.
The highlight of my week was getting to meet John Michael Talbot and talk about theology, music, church history (Catholic, Eastern Christianity, the Jesus Movement), and life. He came into our little, but rapidly growing, natural food and supplement store to sample and sell granola and breakfast bars that the people of his monastic community make. He was everything I had hoped he would be: humble, kind, knowledgeable, and attentive. I told him about my formative years in Calvary Chapel. As we continued talking he said, “I can you have a much broader view of the faith now.” I will take that as sincere compliment. Their community is about an hour southwest of us. The funny thing is most of my co-workers had no idea about him. They all kind of refer to him as Gandalf. Anyway, silly I know.
On a secondary note I need to come back and finish watching the video. I am not sure what I think yet. It seems in some ways to echo some thoughts I have had for years. I am sure, at least generally speaking, I will not agree with everything she says but I remain willing to not only learn but to respectively listen to those who I may not fully agree with. I am open to be surprised.
I discovered John Michael Talbot’s music early in my faith walk in the later 1980s/early 90s. Being a rock/metal fan, that I would still have a special place in my heart for Talbot and his music seems incongruous, but that is where I am at.

I guess in my estimation both philosophically and musically incongruity is a good thing. I am a huge fan of various artists in all genres of music except country. I can not tolerate country. I sorta kinda like Vince Gill as a vocalist, but nope.

I have had major life changes the last few months, and they have changed my attention to things. Probably the biggest change is my communication with, and understanding of God. I don’t know why, but something shifted, and it is literally like a veil was lifted, and everything looks different. During that process, I interviewed, and interviewed again, for a job that I was not entirely sure I wanted. But I saw God’s hand in this opportunity, went through the piles of background checks, buckets of pre-screening, and evaluations, and was offered a job with a school district. This district has 63 campuses, 8 of them are tied to me 24/7/365. It is an HVAC job (which I am massively overqualified for) that is for the tax payers (public schools) rather than money hungry companies who have no personal concern for clients, except of course how to get into their pocketbooks.
The district is horribly underfunded, and so is the division I work for. The people I work with are mostly oblivious to the core problems with the schools, and only work for the district because they don’t want to be salesmen for private companies.
But my clients now are children. And it turns out that I love this job because of that fact. I currently have 63 work orders from my 8 schools, plus a list of hundreds of other problems I have noticed myself in getting to know these campuses. This is much more than a full time job, and I donate my time to addressing problems most weeks more than I am paid for. But I love this job. It has become something that I look forward to every day. The reason I do this job, my daily customers, it has compelled me to levels of care in my work that I have never experienced in all my years of being in extremely advanced and critical purpose HVAC.
Back to the politics. Long time readers know I am way way way off the political spectrum of the US. I am so far left that I have very little tolerance for what passes as “leftist” in this country. I should be absolutely bonkers right now about the political climate, but daily, I thank God that I have this job, and these thousands of little customers, because my time is spent serving them with everything I have. I go home to eat and sleep. I have shut off 99.99% of news and social media. Even my most trusted global news sources are silenced on my phone. I do not pay any attention at all to domestic news. I have not payed attention to US based news in years, but I have intentionally shut it out at this point. When I do read a story about whatever Trump is up to this week, it is from news agencies in nations that don’t even speak English. The global perspective of the US right now is far worse than the average politically attuned American from either side of the isle. But my head, my heart, and my prayers daily turn to what God has set before me to do.
I have been confronted on this “silence” coming from me by friends and family. Keep in mind, I was marching with CPUSA and BLM during the George Floyd protests, locking arms with ACTUAL socialists and anarchists, calling for the demolition of the US’s ENTIRE social, political, and economic structure. I was shot at, sprayed, beaten, chased, and screamed at by police, Proud Boys, riot squads, and all flavor of racist right wing filth you can imagine. They ask me why I am not at it today. They asked me to take part in the ICE OUT protest that happened last week, and considering my 5A high schools were almost empty, and half the teachers from all the schools called in sick that day to be a vocal part of the protests, I went to work, because the hand of God gave me a day to access problems in individual classrooms that were vacant for the day, and I utilized those paid 8 hours to keep the kids warm at school during this messed up Colorado winter, that is Summer one day, and single digit temps the next.
There is eminent threat of ICE raiding the schools in my district. Yes. The schools. You read that right. Credible threats. My largest high school has received direct threats to parents, AND students.
My concern is that the main gymnasium there is a good temperature for the basketball game tonight. The parents and children that will be attending, and participating in that game need the reprieve. I aim to do my part to make it happen. I want to hear the voices of teenagers rattling on about that pass and block at 2:14 in the second quarter, and how awesome the party after the game was.
God Himself has done a miracle with me. Do I want to be out there organizing actual physical resistance to ICE in my community? Yes. Absolutely. But I have received a blessing in a job that I get to pour my expertise into, so that kids from age 5 to 18 can get through another day in relative comfort. Maybe I find the time and conviction to engage in loudly expressing my harshly Marxist/Communist ideals again some day. Maybe I will gain the will to shout at Pharmaceutical companies and “Healthcare” systems that bleed people financially dry for their suffering, and God knows those things still infuriate me. But for today, classroom 263 at a Middle School 5 minutes from where I am pounding out this post while on my mandatory lunch break is 64 degrees, and that’s unacceptable to me right now, and God gave me the task of fixing it.

The church is the vanguard of the Prince of Peace—the community of the baptized who have already turned swords into plowshares. Jesus himself made this explicit when he told Pontius Pilate, “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting … But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” In other words, the kingdom of Jesus does not come from the world of war where armies go forth to fight and kill. The Apostle Paul was echoing this when he wrote, “our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Thus in the pre-Constantine church the Apostolic Tradition “forbade a catechumen or baptized believer from entering the legions, but permitted him, if attracted to the faith while in the legions, to stay there on one condition: ‘Let him not kill.’”[1]
But the idea of waging peace by patience instead of waging war by violence has been lost where the church has been willingly conscripted into serving the nation’s military agenda. War is the ultimate impatience. Instead of hearing Jesus tell Peter to put away his sword, a church with a superstitious reverence for armed combat imagines Jesus leading soldiers into battle—as a thousand Facebook memes attest. Whether it’s crusaders with crosses upon their shields, German soldiers with Gott Mit Uns (God With Us) on their belt buckles, or American evangelicals fawning over the film American Sniper, waging war and following Jesus have been combined in a way that seeks to erase the contradiction established by Christ himself.
Often this is done by equating combat deaths with Jesus’ nonviolent sacrifice of love. At the Courthouse in Andrew County, Missouri where my father served as judge, a new war monument was dedicated on Memorial Day 2017. It included this inscription: “Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. John 15:15.” The obvious implication is that Jesus’ death at the hands of the Roman Empire is somehow similar to the death of American soldiers who are killed while prosecuting war. It’s true that both deaths are sacrificial, but the nature of these sacrificial deaths are quite different. The failure to see the clear difference between Jesus sacrificing his life while forgiving his enemies on the cross and the sacrifice of a soldier slain while waging war on a battlefield is an indication of the degree to which a commitment to militarism has obscured the implications of the gospel. But when waging war is regarded as a religious sacrifice, such confusions abound.

They took the racist video down after, what, 12 hours or something like that, because it had already achieved its goal: it dog whistled to all the racists in the Trump & Co base, “Look, we’re still here, and we are one of you.” The man should be impeached and removed from office on the basis of this post alone, aside from all the other hideous things he’s done. But he won’t be, because racism is very popular in the this country, it’s in the water and the air. Be prepared, because this won’t get better any time soon.
