The Collect
Almighty God, look mercifully upon your people, that by your great goodness they may be governed and preserved evermore; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. âAmen.
Micah 6:6-8
âWith what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?â He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
Psalm 119:1-16
Blessed are those who are undefiled in their ways, * and walk in the law of the Lord.
Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, * and seek him with their whole heart.
Even those who do no wickedness * and perfectly walk in his ways.
You have ordered your precepts * that we should diligently keep them.
O that my ways were made so direct * that I might keep your statutes!
Then would I not be put to shame * while I give heed unto all your commandments.
I will thank you with an upright heart, * when I have learned your righteous judgments.
I will keep your statutes; * O do not forsake me utterly.
How shall a young man cleanse his way? * By ruling himself according to your word.
With my whole heart I have sought you; * O let me not go astray from your commandments.
Your words have I hidden within my heart, * that I may not sin against you.
Blessed are you, O Lord; * teach me your statutes.
With my lips have I been telling * of all the judgments of your mouth.
I have had greater delight in the way of your testimonies * than in all manner of riches.
I will meditate on your commandments * and have respect for all your ways.
My delight will be in your statutes, * and I will not forget your word.
+Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be; world without end. Amen
1 Corinthians 3:1-9
But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? For when one says, âI follow Paul,â and another, âI follow Apollos,â are you not being merely human?
What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building.
Matthew 5:21-37
âYou have heard that it was said to those of old, âYou shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.â But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, âYou fool!â will be liable to the hell of fire. So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.
âYou have heard that it was said, âYou shall not commit adultery.â But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
âIt was also said, âWhoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.â But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
âAgain you have heard that it was said to those of old, âYou shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.â But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply âYesâ or âNoâ; anything more than this comes from evil.
