Prayer & Praise
THE FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT
The Collect
Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations, and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Gen 2:4-9, 15-17, 25-3:7
These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.
When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung upâfor the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the groundâthen the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, âYou may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.â
And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.
He said to the woman, âDid God actually say, âYou shall not eat of any tree in the gardenâ?â And the woman said to the serpent, âWe may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, âYou shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.ââ But the serpent said to the woman, âYou will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.â So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
Psalm 51:1-12
Have mercy upon me, O God, in your great goodness; * according to the multitude of your mercies wipe away my offences.
Wash me thoroughly from my wickedness * and cleanse me from my sin.
For I acknowledge my faults, * and my sin is ever before me.
Against you only have I sinned, and done this evil in your sight, * so that you are justified in your sentence, and blameless in your judgment.
Behold, I was brought forth in wickedness, * and in sin my mother conceived me.
But behold, you desire truth in the inward parts * and shall make me understand wisdom secretly.
You shall purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; * you shall wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
You shall make me hear of joy and gladness, * that the bones which you have broken may rejoice.
Turn your face from my sins * and blot out all my misdeeds.
Create in me a clean heart, O God, * and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence * and take not your holy Spirit from me.
O give me the comfort of your help again * and sustain me with your willing Spirit.
+Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be; world without end. Amen
Romans 5:12-21
Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinnedâfor sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.
But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.
Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Matthew 4:1-11
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, âIf you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.â But he answered, âIt is written,
ââMan shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.ââ
Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, âIf you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,
ââHe will command his angels concerning you,â
and
ââOn their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.ââ
Jesus said to him, âAgain it is written, âYou shall not put the Lord your God to the test.ââ Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, âAll these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.â Then Jesus said to him, âBe gone, Satan! For it is written,
ââYou shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.ââ
Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
Thank you. Very lovely…. Very.
btw, looking for ‘trees’ in the Bible is really fascinating … I’m reading a book called Reforesting Faith on that subject. Once you start looking for “trees” in scripture, it’s very obvious what a beautiful relationship we have with them, and how God uses them to provide so much for us…. food, O2, shade, building materials, heat, etc… Earths Story involves the Tree of Life, the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, the Tree on Golgotha, and finally, the Tree of Life again.
It’s a beautiful meditation, and certainly changes how I look at and admire the beautiful trees around my area. God made them and gave them to us.
Paige, interesting.. Years ago my daughter in law and i did that – amazing study indeed
My caregiver Sandra has requested prayer for her discernment of an unexpected opportunity to become a more public advocate for the homeless, especially the challenges that homeless women face. Sandra participates in her church’s ministry of providing meals, clothing and occasional housing opportunities. She understands the serious responsibilities of being an effective and sensitive communicator of those needs and also the benefits and temptations that a more public presence might bring into her life. Her passion is great to be obedient to God and truly serve others. I am blessed to be one of her beneficiaries!! Please remember her in your prayers.
In following on with the scriptural meditations, I am drawn to Hebrews 12–in particular the first two verses and the last two verses.
1. Wherefore seeing we are also compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.
2. Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
28. Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
29. For our God is a consuming fire.
Praying with you, Nancy…
please remember in prayerâŠ..

Paige â Asking for prayer for a family issue⊠God knowsâŠ. and the silencing of a lying gossip who is spreading slander about me to family members and others. Itâs an on going issue that is quite perplexing, and apparently demonic. Twisted, delusional and strange.
I spoke to a trusted friend about the issue and was told âSatan has given XYZ power to turn people against youâ and âXYZ has been used by Satan to destroy your former marriage and harm the church and now to divide your familyâ.
This XYZ happens to also be cyber stalking me here on the Phoenix preacher.
May God enlighten all souls to see and know Truth and walk in it by His Spirit.

Pretty important that he wake up enough to follow commands.” ….. his wife wants to thank all who have prayed… it has been a long vigil for her, to say the least
