God doesn’t speak to me. Never has. There are occasions where inexplicable things happen, but I imagine that is part of the human experience. I am trying to relearn a god that I am not sure I have ever seen.

But now, I am kinda in a state of desperation. My life is commercial industrial HVAC. I am actually really good at it. I get calls almost daily from former coworkers about stuff they can’t figure out. I enjoy doing it.

Over the years I have really gotten to know a ton of people in the industry. GMs to technicians to counter jockeys at the supply stores. Everywhere I go these days, people know me by name. I have built the reputation in Colorado of being the guy that will bend over backwards to make it work, from minor repairs to multi-million dollar install jobs. I have had some of the most prestigious design build jobs in the state, rivaling the big name companies with all aspects of this industry. My specialization has always been critical purpose, like data centers, hospitals, production facilities… and they seek me out even now, but the problem is I am trying to slow down. This industry has taken its toll on my body and my sanity. I spent today replacing a compressor on a massive rooftop unit in 100 degree temps, and had to AGAIN stop, and tell myself I can’t do this anymore.

And it’s true. I can’t. This job is literally destroying my physical well-being. My knees, my back, my shoulders, neuropathy, skin (because I am always on a roof), and it has become a state of desperation.

I have to try to do something with what I am good at. I am actually very good in the HVAC industry. So I am seeking a different pace in this job. Maybe one where I can sit at a parts supply counter all day, and shoot the breeze with the old guys I know, and help teach the new guys. Every supply house I go into, I get at least 3 hellos by name when I walk in. It seems a natural choice to transition to that, but these guys behind the counter are like me, aging badly, and only wanted out of the field while still being able to help people.

But I have to get out of the field.

If you pray and actually hear god, that’s my request. I gotta get off the roofs. I can’t imagine doing this another year. It’s literally destroying me physically.

I’ll be praying Reuben. When I was a service tech for Starbucks, I had the opportunity to learn about commercial ice makers. Essentially, a small air conditioning unit that freezes water. Might be worth checking into…

    Reuben, praying here too.

  11. London says:

I could see you as an instructor at a technical college or jr. college somewhere.
Clearly from your time preaching you know how to speak in public, prepare lessons and help others learn. Plus, your knowledge about real life scenarios in HVAC would help ensure students learn customer service, efficiency and safety on the job.

  12. Captain Kevin says:

    What London said!

It sounds like a dream come true
