TGIF
Every night the ancient cat pulls herself up on to my bed with great difficulty.
It takes some time for her and the effort is painful.
She comes straight up the comforter to where my head lies on the pillow, nuzzles my hair, and purrs herself to sleep hugging me tightly.
She used to roam the neighborhood during the day but she senses now that she’s too old, too slow, too deaf, to do so safely.
She stays in and stays close.
She knows the end is coming and she wants company when it arrives.
I’m preparing for it, getting ready for another goodbye.
The preparation won’t help much…I will grieve deeply.
I hate death.
Death is the inevitable end for us all, pets and people… the last word in this world is always goodbye.
Good Friday.
The day that Jesus died.
How can we possibly call that good?
We call it good because by His death, death itself was defeated.
Today, we lament the death of our Savior, and all He endured for us.
We lament the existence of death and all the pain it brings to us and those we love.
We stand in grief knowing the price that was paid for our redemption and the redemption of the whole creation.
We should lament it fully…we need to know it in its awful fullness if we are to know the real wonder of its defeat.
However, we know the end of the story.
He rose again.
Because He did,we will too.
I believe that.
I’ll miss this cat when she goes…I still miss my friend Chester every day.
I miss some people too…
I wish they’d never had to go.
Thank God for Jesus.
Good Friday…when the last words in this world were changed from “goodbye” to “see you later” .

I wrote that piece a few years ago.
I never wrote the rest of the story because that cat died the worst death of any animal I’ve ever owned.
She declined suddenly and dramatically and the few minutes it took to get her to the vet were full of pain and terror.
I’ve never seen such terror in one of mine and I’ve never gotten over it.
She did not die in peace…she never heard any of my affirmations of love or thanks for her years of friendship.
She died screaming with the last reserves her little body could muster.
Most of the time we are able to sanitize and anesthetize death, whether it be the death of a human or a pet.
We follow it with talk of “rainbow bridges” and have “celebrations of life”.
This cat would have none of those lies accompany her and she faced death for what it was and what it is.
The last enemy.
It has taken me years to speak of that day, though the pictures in my mind appear without notice and those pictures taunt and condemn me.
The older I get, the less time the memories have to torment me, because every day seems to bring news of fresh grief.
The older I get , the more grief I carry and the more grief I anticipate, the better Good Friday becomes.
Death was defeated.
I wish I’d been able to speak to Mommacat about Easter…but I’ll see her soon.

We DO sanitize death, as we do persistent lengthy serious illness, or other forms of suffering that we don’t want to face. It’s defensive. It helps the one not suffering but it doesn’t much help the sufferer.
I carry trauma of my loss, as you do re this cat’s death. It can be awful to be there and try to assist when assistance is futile. I don’t know why it must be that way.
My hope is no longer in this world. I do what I can for love’s sake and suffering has taught me a lot about love; maybe that’s the point.
I appreciate that Jesus was a realist, not a romantic. And that he accepted that love is sweet and also entails suffering – ‘be not dismayed for I have overcome the world’ is a promise I believe.
Alex,
Well said, as always.
Your words and ways in your loss have greatly strengthened my own faith and helped me cast down hope in anything but Jesus.
That hope is real…as real as the grief that formed it.
Good Friday? ….. AMEN
Was wondering the same thought today? Why “good?”
Hoping to finally meet you in heaven, Michael
God keep! ! !
Sad, hopeful and beautiful writing, Michael. The older and more frail I get, the more I understand this lament of which you speak, along with the hope of resurrection. Bless you, my friend.
Em,
I’ll see you there, my friend…
Thanks, CK…blessings to you as well…
What a heartbreaking story, Michael. I’m heartbroken for you. It must have been hard as hell to finish it.
Easter offers the ultimate hope, doesn’t it? That God has conquered death and offers that same victory to whomever will accept it?
I believed that for years…and then I didn’t….and then I did, and didn’t and did…keeping my doubts and skepticism informed by years of personal pain and divine silence to myself so I didn’t have to hear the ‘encouragement’ to just believe and trust in Him and everything will be alright.
Michael, you have a way with words that should be known by every Christian on the planet. It won’t sell like the crap in the Christian books section of Amazon, but it’s far far superior to much of whatever you will find there.
Happy Good Friday, In Between Saturday and Easter Sunday, Michael, and to the rest of the community.
BrianD,
Thank you for the kind words.
I stumbled upon the first piece when I was looking for something to put up today…I’ve been staggered by losses and near misses for the last couple years and needed to remind myself both of the cruelty od life and the hope that someday all will be well..
Jesus is the only God I could ever worship because He didn’t watch from afar and feel bad for us…He entered into the loneliness and despair and faced the end we all must face.
Nothing will be alright until He returns…but then all things will be well.
May you know Him in His suffering and His victory, my friend.
“Jesus is the only God I could ever worship because He didn’t watch from afar and feel bad for us…He entered into the loneliness and despair and faced the end we all must face.
Nothing will be alright until He returns…but then all things will be well.”
Damn, that is good! May I post that (with credit to the author)?
CK,
Of course…don’t need to ask or credit if it’s helpful…
Michael…
Feeling the pain you have spoken regarding losing your kitties & knowing all will be made right someday…it’s never easy saying goodbye to our pets & loved ones but HE will make it right. Looking forward to Heaven.
Thank you for your applications..and thanking Jesus for making the ultimate sacrifice for us!
Thank you, pslady!
Kittens…..
Neighbor (couple miles downriver) told my daughter that counted and eagles will eliminate her surplus…… SAY WHAT? ? !
Counted? Nope coyotes! ! !
