Liam and conquered mousies
On a whim, I decided to buy my cat Liam some catnip mice to play with.
I’ve never had a cat that was the least bit interested in catnip, probably the result of having been raised by fundamentalists before they arrived at my house.
Liam, on the other hand…seemed to love it.
If the cat loves it, I love it, and thus Liam has about a dozen catnip mousies distributed unevenly around our living quarters.
I was watching him joyfully bat them about the floor, occasionally throwing them up in the air and leaping after them as if they were living prey he was not only conquering, but humiliating.
Watching him play for a while, I wondered…does he know they’re not real?
Does he know that they are simply cloth stuffed with an aromatic weed or does he think we’ve been invaded by brightly colored vermin?
I think he knows the difference, but pointing that out could ruin the fun.
This got me thinking about people…
My social media is full of people railing against perceived enemies and threats to all that is good and holy in their opinion.
This person is a devil, that person is a satan, this group is evil…
Some of the anger is earned and legitimate, some just from bias, and some is downright weird.
They do seem to enjoy attacking something or someone as they do it on an almost daily basis.
The Apostle Paul tells us that our real enemies are not people but dark forces in heavenly places.
He says are tools to fight are found in the spirit, not in the flesh.
Jesus says that some of these devils only respond to prayer and fasting.
If Liam wants to kill live vermin, he has to go out and put in the work… if we want to really fight evil, we have to come in and do the work.
Liam prefers to get his prey delivered from WalMart and we prefer to have ours delivered by the media of our choice.
Most of us of don’t really want to do the work, we just like to fight.
At least Liam understands that his prey is not real and he’s not really accomplishing anything.
This makes Liam wise…and makes us…
Make your own application…

Felix has so many toys, tunnels, posts…I’ve lost track of them. But, he has favorites, and he will bring them over to me and want me to throw them so he can chase them, and throw them again, and again.
Application, for me, is contentment. There is always more to do and always more to aspire to. Sometimes it is okay to be content, not rail at the world, and bask in the fact that God loves me and cares for me.
