As one who has always lavishly loved her pets, I share your thoughts, especially when well-meaning friends tell me that a cat can’t possibly meet my needs, living alone. They don’t know Felix (who already has let me know that he is jealous of Liam and why can’t he go outside? Well,it’s the rules where we live, and I’m just off the freeway! He does have a lovely catio, where he can watch all the neighborhood birds and squirrels).

We can also spoil God’s good gifts by “over-loving” them and not trusting them to be away from us. I’m thinking of the child that never gains emotional freedom from their parents, the smothering friendships where green-eyed monsters try to keep our “special” relationship “exclusive” from all others, the domineering partner that will never let their spouse cultivate their own interests and gifts. Somewhere there is a middle ground that, as much as we cherish those relationships. we keep an open hand and let God work His perfect will in and through them. When I have had that open hand, God has enriched those relationships, and made them even more special.

I’m still learning how to love well at my age.

Most of the scars we all bear come from being unloved, or as you note, loved poorly.

I let go of people too easily…cats not so much.

I don’t expect Liam to meet all my needs…he isn’t interested in discussing Bonhoeffer and he doesn’t like to listen to Jerry Lee. (He prefers The Statler Brothers).

He is a constant and caring friend…and those are always a gift from God.

Liam says to tell Felix about fleas, tics and street sweepers…. 🙂

  4. Captain Kevin says:

“He prefers The Statler Brothers.” LOL!!

“Liam says to tell Felix about fleas, tics and street sweepers…” I try to stay away from those myself.

I like that the NLT of the Luke passage uses the term “by comparison.” We can’t love people or pets too much. We’re to love God more than all.

  6. Linn says:

Amen, Captain Kevin (we’re to love God more than all).

Michael-I will pass on the message to Felix. I don’t think he would know what to do outdoors except to roll over on his back, wave his paws in the air, and ask for treats.

True story…I was having one of “those” nights and stumbled upon the video of the Statlers final concert.

Liam woke up, walked the full length of the bed to get closer and was obviously enjoying the music.
He covers his face when I play Jerry…

  8. Michael says:

The NLT is very good at providing clarity…there are a couple of missteps, but it’s a great translation for the average Bible reader.

I had a cat that loved Rick Ross, especially next to the subwoofer.

I’ll be thankful Liam is a tad more mellow in his tastes…
