The Trump Assassination Attempt
We’re getting emails concerning what our response is to the attempt on Donald Trump’s life.
It’s pretty simple…political violence can have no place in this country.
Democracy is delicate and ours is in deep trouble already…this violence is unacceptable.
We condemn the shooter and pray for the victims and our country.
I agree with you Michael and your succinct statement.
I fear that the fearmongering stirred up by both extremes of the political spectrum may be behind such evil actions. I hear and read things that could easily cause an unstable person to feel like they need to do something rash.
Sin sure does seem to easily find a foothold in the halls (and basements) of power.
Was this a nutter like Squeaky Fromme and Hinkley, or more politically motivated? We’ll see… maybe no difference given the climate.
I remember when George Wallace was shot and wounded. I was not a fan of his politics, but I felt the shooting was a direct assault on American democracy. I feel the same about the attempt on Trump.

Maybe this will tone down the rhetoric. If someone is villainized often enough it becomes virtuous to stop them.
Democracy is indeed delicate, it is mob rule writ large, but a representative democracy is resilient. We’ll get through this but our union is definitely stretched and frayed.
We must do our part to bind the wound and find Lincoln’s illusive ‘malice toward none.’ Surely the community of Christ can do this.
I woke up this morning thinking about how caustic our national politics have become (and have been for a long time). Every 4 years, we the people have to endure an onslaught of tv commercials and mailers full of propaganda designed to terrorize. Candidates dig at each other with impunity (Trump has been one of the worst I’ve ever witnessed). Lies and half-truths endlessly pour out of the political machines. The culture of the country is set by its leaders. And most of our leaders are doing a really bad job.
I couldn’t help but think of a certain disciple who cut off the servant’s right ear without waiting for the Lord’s answer as to whether or not to strike. Totally unrelated to politics— have any scholars speculated as to which disciple had the second sword, and why he kept it sheathed?
I’ll mention here what I won’t say locally (where armed men come into my store daily just like the Wild West). Was it more likely Trump’s assassin would be A: a certain disciple with a sword, B: a tree hugger with a spike, Or C: a Republican kid with an AR-15?
