Isaiah 59:14-15
Every morning I wake up in a lot of pain and navigate a couple of feet to my desk, where I take my medications and sit on a heating pad until I think I’m safe to venture more than a couple of feet.
This is when I read my email.
I hadn’t gotten far through the political ads and bill notifications when there was a piece of mail noting an old article Charles Bowden had written.
I followed the link and re-read the piece he had written for Esquire in 2013...it was, as usual, a masterpiece of investigative work and should have been received as a truth bomb blowing away all the layers of deceit it chronicled.
It landed with a thud, as most truth does these days.
The article was also a defense of another reporter who had done all the heavy lifting on the subject and whose life was ruined for having done so.
Chuck wrote the piece before that reporter committed suicide…his name was Gary Webb and he’s one of my patron saints.
Bowden wrote one last story in Gary’s honor...proving that what he gave his life for was truth.
It was Bowden’s last story, period…he died soon after broke, and in ill health…telling the truth in this culture will kill you quicker than cancer.
I tell you all of this because the next email was about a story that Rebecca Hopkins has written about a scandal involving NAR star Chris Reed.
It was the second story she has written on the subject, the first was an excellent piece detailing the allegations against Reed.
The second piece ends with Reed breathing threats of legal action against Hopkins.
I stopped and prayed for Rebecca…and then the rage came.
The fact that Reed had issues was not a secret in the circles he ran in…
Whenever you see an article about some “Christian” leader in trouble, you need to understand that (at the very least,) his immediate peer group was aware of problems long before you see it publicized.
Usually that knowledge extends far beyond the immediate peer group.
People know, but the code of conduct in the group demands silence.
It also demands that anyone who gets ahold of the story be silenced.
It demands lies…spoken and unspoken.
Rebecca Hopkins does excellent work…she’s careful and professional and her heart is for Jesus and His church.
She’s also turning over a bunch of the moneychangers tables.
I just hope she is not laboring under the delusion that anyone will appreciate her heart for the truth…especially in the church.
Make you own application…

“People know, but the code of conduct in the group demands silence.
It also demands that anyone who gets ahold of the story be silenced.
It demands lies…spoken and unspoken.”
I can’t even imagine what judgement will be like for these kind of people.
There have been so many of these reveals in the past few years that I am beginning to wonder about the number of brain cells the average Christian possesses. Anyone who claims to have that much “authority” over your life is probably a false teacher (in my opinion). If the ministry is all about the preachers and the Benjamins, it’s probably not a good one. And, it’s not just large ministries. The smaller Baptist church I was a part of right out of college had a very domineering pastor who had a “side wife” who was a genuine floozy (actually wore gold lame sequined dresses to service and sat in the front row making Google eyes at the pastor). It was so sad. The pastor was always hitting up members for extra funds and privileges, and he was rarely denied. Privilege run amok.
I hope Ms Hopkins is careful to guard her own heart because these situations can leave one quite jaded.
Linn,
“Quite jaded” is a good way to describe me…
I fear for Rebecca…she has a family and I know too well that those she is exposing will not hesitate to try to harm them in any way they can…
I read most of the Roy report. What stuck out for me as particularly reprehensible was the use of “prophesy” as a tool of a predatory abuse to manipulate a weak mind.
Jean,
If you think that’s a hoot look up the “Elijah List”.
Never underestimate the stupidity of the masses…
Yeah, I remember the “Elijah List.” I’d read it to see the depths of theobvious deception going on.
What’s really sad is that that kind of crap has multiplied exponentially in the last 10 years or so.
Michael,
I hope Rebecca is careful. I know that Julie Roy’s list her job at Moody Radio for some scandal at MBI a few years back. Since Rebecca is doing articles for Julie I trust that she will be filled in on the care she needs to take.
I looked at the Elijah list. Then should change the name to PhakeProphetsRUs. Bizarre!
The Bible is a great and wonderful thing to be sure.
But I also think it suffers from two great ills.
Not giving it the credence it deserves at one extreme, and making way too much of it at the other.
bob1,
It multiplies because no one will say that the emperor has no clothes…because most of them are buck naked too…
Linn,
I’ve worked a little bit with Rebecca and I trust her…I’m not so sure about Julie Roys…
