TGIF
The clock on my night stand is an hour fast.
I got irritated by the government messing with time and demanding that I either “spring forward” or “fall back” depending on their whim.
The last time I was told to “fall back” I refused to comply.
The math is easy enough to do in my head.
I’m a contrarian, I suppose.
Today is New Years Day and I am purposefully bereft of resolutions…except for one.
There will be no new diet to make me miserable.
I love Mexican Coke and pork chops and believe that God placed them both here to help me survive in a fallen world.
There will be no new Bible reading plan as if at my age I haven’t read it already.
Most of the folks “resolving” to read the whole book will hit Leviticus like a brick wall and decide that the book of John tells them all they need to know.
You can only handle so many passages about sores and bodily discharges before you gag and give up.
There is no shame in being a pudgy Gentile who uses band-aids and Neosporin.
They say that if you want to be successful you should emulate a mentor.
I want to be a better writer and my mentor would be the late Charles Bowden.
He rose every morning at three am and wrote for hours.
Then he took a nap.
Then he rose again and drank like a fish until he fell asleep.
This is far more attractive to me than Leviticus, but unfortunately, unworkable.
My single resolution would be simply to believe God.
““Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
(Matthew 6:25–34 ESV)
God says ‘don’t worry”.
He says He’s your father.
A good father.
He places great value on you.
He knows what you need.
He’ll provide it.
He knows there will be trouble.
He can handle it.
Live in today.
Tomorrow will have trouble too.
He’s got it covered.
Don’t worry.
That’s my resolution.
I’ll blow this one too, but every day is new in the kingdom.
Make your own application…

Happy New Year!
Happy New Year, Jean!
Such a good reminder!
Thank you, Nonnie!
A great tgif to start year! Happy New Year, Michael!
Your clock is an hour fast? Is that a humble-boast that you are ahead of your time 🙂
– well, at least for half of the year.
Happy New Year, Pam!
EricL,
It’s probably more of a confession that I’m an idiot… 🙂
I think it was through your latest Linkathon that I found the “Two Words” post. The two words: faithful and useful. Great resolution for the new year, and not inconsistent with what you’ve just written. Be faithful, and be useful. To God and to others. Everything else is incidental…. Happy New Year!
Fred S,
Welcome… and Happy New Year to you as well.
Best devotion on resolutions I’ve ever read!! I have a few mentors in my life that I would like to emulate. You are certainly one of them, Michael! May the God of grace and truth bless you beyond what you can ask or even imagine in 2016.
P.S. I’d say move here to the other Phoenix. We never change our clocks! On the other hand, Mark Driscoll moved here, so the air quality isn’t as good as it used to be. 😉
CK,
Thank you my friend!
May God do likewise for you…and clean that noxious air out of your town as a bonus. 🙂
Great TGIF & devotion. I to wish they would just leave the time alone. AZ has it right on that one. Happy New Year to you & all at the PxP!
Thank you, AA… Happy New Year to you as well.
As someone with an anxiety disorder, those verses about not worrying seem almost implausible to me. But I know I believe it’s what Jesus said, and I know His wisdom is applicable to my daily life. Thank you Michael for reminding me of these things.
My husband said “I think I’ll read through the Bible this year. I’ll probably only last til January 2nd”. ha….
I did read through in 2014… and by the time I got to Romans, my mind was completely blown by salvation by Faith through Grace was even more massive when compared to Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Massive.
I’ll mostly be in the New Testament only this year…. well, an occasional Psalms, Proverbs or Lamentations.
I have a friend who loves Song of Solomon. Curious. I must say it has never spoken to me in any way. I don’t get it.
Happy New Year Michael and friends….
Happy New Year Michael.
My resolution is not to make any.Usually I screw it up anyway.
Oh yes…and Happy New Year to all!
Great devotion, Michael. “Help me overcome my unbelief!”
I am going to cop to having began another 1-year Bible reading plan. But I want to share why. I enjoy reading theology books, which tend to systemitize Bible material and filter it through a theological lens. One could know lots of doctrine, but I fear little of Christ. So, for me, keeping in God’s Word regularly (in addition to the lectionary readings in church) helps keep me objective and intimate with my Savior.
Thanks, all…been busy all day.
happy new year Michael .. thank you for your wisdom in 2015 .. looking forward to reading your blog through 2016 .. still praying your loving ticker will fully recover
Happy New year all.
Thank you, John!
Happy New Year, Brian…
