I loved Gayle. In 1980 I was teaching my first semester at CC Bible School in Twin Peaks. He was a guest speaker. I was sitting and enjoying a cup of coffee. He came over and sat with me and said, “So tell me your story”. Thus began over 40 years of friendship. I learned a great deal from him, not theologically but how to love others. When my daughter was 4 she saw him and said, “Hey, there’s the man who loves kids!”. There will be thousands of similar stories. He walked the talk as good as anyone. Well done, my dear friend. You will be sorely missed.
DavidM,
I’m sorry for your loss.
You had his back in difficult times…you were a good friend to him.
The farther we go the more of these losses we endure…
I always liked Gayle. Didn’t know him well, but spoke with him on a few occasions. He seemed like the real deal.
I saw him a couple times at regional pastors conferences. He was a memorable teacher.
From everything that I saw about him, he was one of the good guys. He wasn’t afraid to challenge the status quo but did so in such a way that disarmed their defensiveness and anger. He knew how to gently call people to repentance and to a loving God. Gayle reconstructed my understanding of God, something I have continued to build on since the first Jesus Style seminar I heard him teach. Thanks, Gayle. Memory eternal.
I remember him being accessible, with a great sense of humor and truly likable. He was a fine example to aspire to. 🙏🏼
I was saddened to hear this. I crossed paths with him several times back in the early 2000’s and he always seemed to have a heart for the Lord and for people. Before I was on staff at a local Calvary he had come to speak one Sunday. After the evening service, my son who was fairly young at the time wanted to say hello to him. My wife walked with him up to Gayle and I was close by. Gayle with a big, welcoming smile on his face stuck out his hand and my son did the same. Gayle shook his hand and just kept on shaking it as he asked him his name and chatted for a bit. After a few seconds of this hand shaking they all parted ways and my son turned to my wife and asked, “Is he for real Mom?” It’s a scene I will never forget.
Gayle wrote a couple of books, “That Reminds Me Of A Story” and “That Reminds Me Of Another Story.” He was a storyteller at heart and it really came through in the collection of short stories these books contained.
After an evening service in the early 2000’s my wife picked up the first one in the church library and brought it home. That night after we had all gone to bed my wife and I would read for a while before going to sleep. I started the book and read a little to my wife and we were both laughing at the humor. The kids heard us laughing and came into our bedroom wondering what was going on. Within a few moments they crawled into bed with us listened as I read several of the short stories aloud. That became an evening ritual that lasted through both of those books and several others.
Priceless memories that Gayle had a part in.
R.I.P Gayle Erwin.
