Open Blogging by Michael · July 24, 2010 It’s all yours today…even though I couldn’t find a cartoon. Share
Music is up for the week. Feel free to drop by and give a listen.
I’m not sure I can function without my Saturday morning cartoon.
Here’s a cartoon.
For those of you following along at home, I have updated the Juarez Daily Body Count.
just finished moving the last of my parent’s belongings to SCal from San Lorenzo. Now Northern & Central California is home to my roots, memories and priceless friends and family. An old chapter is closed.
I am beginning a project to publish my father’s many paintings & drawings. He was a self taught artists who, in addition to working tirelessly as a Teamster also had a commercial sign studio and drew and painted for the sheer joy of it. My mother was his muse and greatest companion, and her company and encouragement were the inspiration behind his zest for life.
As I start cataloging his work, scanning & photographing I’ll share the progress with you all.
I owe my talents to the cultivation & encouragement my parents gave me, and my wife of 30 years is also my muse, along with each of you who have been sone sort of encouragement, even as I have worked thru some of my most challenging spiritual questions.
Have an awe inspiring day!
I need prayer today. Our son had his son dedicated on Father’s Day. We were not invited. Our former church treats us like non-believers without any cause. The pastor and associate pastor allowed this without thinking about the ramifications, leading to my wife and daughters being very hurt. These people used to be my friends. Anger keeps welling up inside me, and I have to keep praying so that I don’t just explode. Please keep me in prayer.
You got it, Joe.
You’re a good man.
On a much happier note…Trey and I got to break bread with Centorian…and I’m reminded again of how sweet and powerful Christian fellowship can be.
Trey asked me afterwards, “that’s what you mean when you talk about being a good man isn’t it?”
Yep…that’s what I mean.
Praying for you Joe.
On another subject, I recently heard a pastor intimate from the pulpit that the U.S. government and current administration may be purposefully not working too hard to cap and fix the BP oil spill in the Gulf. The reason being that the government could then politically take advantage of trying to suspend other off-shore drilling. Ultimately, the pastor’s point was to try to tie it into End Times implications.
Just looking for anybody’s thoughts on this. Do you think such a thing should be brought up from the pulpit? The pastor didn’t make any direct accusations, but certainly intimated that it could be the case.
“Do you think such a thing should be brought up from the pulpit?”
Let me guess….the pastor is a Republican right? Oh wait …of course he is, he’s a christian isn’t he…he must be. 🙄
Michael, could you be more direct next time? 🙂
I also welcome thoughts from anyone else who may have an opinion.
Don’t know the pastor’s political affiliation, but you’re probably not far off.
Joe that sucks!
Michael…your 10:12am…that’s so cool.
Can’t wait to someday break bread with you and hopefully Centy also.
Joe, praying for you…praying that the anger doesn’t take hold…I can empathize.
KevinH…that assertion from the pulpit is odd to me…I mean conspiracy theories have their place…but, from the pulpit? Dunno.
Kevin- I know it and I don’t even attend that church
Michael, is it possible to place a share button on the “daily body count” thread. I would like to link it to my facebook page.
Don’t know whether the statement made was by a Republican, Democrate, Libertarian, or Tea Party. Regardless, as a pastor, my job is to illuminate the scripture as best I possibly can and leave politics to the politicians
Historically when people are struggling economically, politically, etc. all the end times stuff gets rolled out. It drives me to distraction when preachers and pundits start claiming that such and such is a sign of the end, or that so and so is conspiring to take over the world.
I believe the End of Days stuff is ironic in the sense that for each of us…our Vapor is rapidly expiring…and we will face our own personal End of Days very soon.
Each generation has had troubles that one could point to the End. Many seniors with us remember Adolph Hitler…if ever there was a potential Anti-Christ, it was him.
…now don’t get me wrong…there are “things” going on in our Vapor which seem potentially End of Days ‘ish…but, who knows…the End may be days, weeks, months, years, decades, centuries, millennia from now.
I see how the comment is relevant to end times issues. BP is the abbreviation for ‘Beast’ and ‘Prophet.’ Once our government locates the Anti-Christ then they will merge to form BFPAC (Beast, False Prophet and Anti-Christ).
Together, they will form an alliance with Europe and through the use of windows products take over the world.
If you use window, then you already have the Mark!
I’m so sorry. But outlandish, idiot comments like that stir up way too many emotions. I certainly don’t mean to make fun of your question… but allow me to quote Forest Gump, ‘Stupid is what Stupid Does!’ That comment is stupid!
One last thought… Does CCOF oversee the well in the Gulf? I’m sure they are connected somehow! LOL!
Sounds like you are you saying “Our master delays his coming…”
Let me second Michael’s “Hell, no.”
I have used BP gas in the past. So does that mean that I’ve taken the mark of the beast or is it just my car that has the mark? 🙂
No offense taken. I was just looking for honest feedback and I kind of expected some responses like yours.
Whew! Glad to read your response.
Yeah, your car is ‘marked!’
You should wash it 3 times and play Barry Manilow song’s! It always works!
praying for a very heart-wrenching situation that God will give you peace, insight, and wisdom.
the pastor is a dork to go there. he is showing a true lack of judgement.
Regardless, as a pastor, my job is to illuminate the scripture as best I possibly can and leave politics to the politicians
I hear you Steve H.
The problem is that almost everything today has a political component to it. We aren’t in a classroom when we teach the Word, but we are hopefully showing the application and relevance to the authority of Scripture, and how it is the Scripture that has the answers to our individual problems, our community problems, our state and national problems.
Of course, the pulpit is no place for conspiracy theories, assumptions of sinister motives, or shapreming a partisan axe. The example in question above has no place in the pulpit of Jesus Christ. it is doubly as wrong when used as an example of the endtimes.
Michael, you couldn’t find a cartoon?
I thought for sure you would have used this…
I heard one idiot pundit … giving us the nonsense that the Gulf oil spill was what the Bible means by turning the water to blood…. I switched channels lest I throw the remote and ruin a perfectly good plasma..
As for end times: I am preaching through Acts with an eye on the Revelation… if amilers have understood Revelation then it should be reflected in Acts … so far so good but just getting started. This is how premilers always preach the rest of the NT …so I thought it time to show how easily one can illustrate the other side.
Every day I hate pretribulationalism more….
Dread…how could a pretribber think the oil spill fulfilled the prophecy of ‘water turning to blood’?
That makes no sense.
Looks like Dread splut for awhile. As am I now…
My point was that the pretrib position most deifinitely would not equate anything in Rev 8 to today’s happenings. Other eschatologies might do so, but not pretrib.
Of course, since this was some guy on TV, all bets are off as to what sort of doctrine he might be sharing to keep people tuning in. No need to slander us pretribbers 🙂
Thanks for the feedback everyone on the oil spill commentary. It really rubbed me the wrong way when I heard it. I just wanted to see what I could glean from others, too.
BP = end time conspiracy? of course! and oil does become blood if you close your eyes and to a million backwards! try it! it works! I read about it on the web!
As I’m begininig to think more and more; it’s all BS, not BP.
AV… consistency has never gotten in the way of irrationality ….
Since this is open blogging, and since it was a topic this week.
I watched Shirley Sherrod speak to Anderson Cooper on his 360 show. This lady has had a very tough week, and if she is a woman of faith, as reported here on PP, then she needs to apologize and repent, as we are taught.
I wrote Micheal privately about my feelings concerning the evils of racism, and my fellings about being called a racist for political disagreement (which has happened to me more times than I can count). Until we can talk about the tough issues of our day without these accusations, we are going to fail as a nation in addressing them. Again, this madness started with the NAACP’s accusation of racism against the entire Tea Party movement. I really have nothing more to say
Here is the quote concerning Breitbart and video is easy to find.
SHERROD…I think he would like to get us stuck back in the times of slavery. That’s where I think he would like to see all black people end up again.
COOPER: You think — you think he’s racist?
SHERROD: … I think he’s so vicious. Yes, I do.
And I think that’s why he’s so vicious against a black president, you know. He would go after me. I don’t think it was even the NAACP he was totally after. I think he was after a black president.
Pjay…BP…PB….see the connection?
…. 🙂 8)
…lest anyone takes that one seriously.
Steve H, your 11:47am…possibly.
More that I really don’t know…neither do any of us really. Eschatology fascinates me…and it humbles me…because one really can’t be certain…there is much ambiguity and mystery.
…the only thing I’m certain of is…my time is short.
I met to type count to a million. Close your eyes, count to a million, and the oil in the water will be like blood…..
I thunk Ms Sherrod gets a pass of whatever she says this past week.
Many of us would be saying much worse if we’d had the week she had.
Think. Dang little phone keyboard
Maybe you should take a break from politics, news cycles, and talk radio for awhile.
We were kinda thinking that a hurricane would spread the oil around, then lightning would strike, setting it on fire and voila! “not by water but fire next time”.
I’m inclined to agree with whoever said ‘bs not bp’. made me LOL.
SteveH…right on….. hope you’re having some great RnR in M 🙂
the oil leak has exposed everyone to know less than they should or thought they did. Few with so much at risk perform without a net. I think its a much better study in human behavior than eschatology.
“if she is a woman of faith, as reported here on PP, then she needs to apologize and repent, as we are taught.”
Um, lessee here, SHE needs to APOLOGISE & REPENT??????
…gets accused by an edited videotape and targeted by a partisan blogger with no regard for context, fact of the presentation she actually gave is completely ignored, gets thrown under the bus by NAACP, then her boss, then the president & a major news org, but SHE needs to “apologize & repent as we are taught…”
Who is “we” and who is teaching “we” such bulls*it? … just so I can steer clear?
If you really want a contribution from me I will have to write it under the title Why I am a Nondenominational Charismatic … unless you need something parsed a little finer. Even I am not that happy with that moniker but it is largely true.
I really do and you can title it as you desire.
“Why I am a Theological Mutt”
I just got back from the hospital where Trey’s grandma is in ICU.
It doesn’t look good.
We do covet your prayers for the family.
Michael: Prayers are ascending.
“if she is a woman of faith, as reported here on PP, then she needs to apologize and repent, as we are taught.”
Thank you, Centy.
Trey wanted me to call you and ask you to pray…he says he knows you talk to God.
Thank you, Lutheran…I’m getting ready for church and I’ll be back tonight.
Do you know who Andrew Peterson is? You should. His music means so much to me and I wrote this in honor of his new album “Counting Stars”.
Adam, thank you for posting that.
The Good Confession song is beautiful!
Praying. Hug Trey!
I know this is not as important as Paris Hilton or Mel Gibson’s latest phone etiquette training class but the United States has been invaded by a foreign military
Well it could be that we were not invaded but it is still very plausible there is a war going on right at our border.
My apologies about the first mis information if it is.
Lord, have mercy on Trey’s grandma.
Michael, praying now.
Joe M., prayers for you as well.
Thank you all for the prayers. I got through the day without losing my temper.
Michael, we are praying for you, Trey, and his Grandma.
Just checking in. Been busy focusing on praying for people with cancer. One is the six year old daughter of Britt Merrick. Her name is Daisy Love. She was diagnosed with a Wilms tumor about seven or eight months ago. They surgically removed it and she underwent chemo. Two months ago she was declared cancer free. A week or so ago they discovered another tumor which had grown to the size of a grapefruit in just two months. They are in chemo once again started yesterday. She has a 30-50% cure rate according to modern medicine. We know that she is in God’s hands. Also, a sister from our church (Lynn Morgan) has cancer and it has spread to her lungs. She is also undergoing chemo as I write. Two other friends have breast cancer and we’re continuing to pray for them as well..
We are praying, believing for their complete recovery.
Love you all,
Oden @ 67:
Definitely join with you in prayer for both of them – I remember hearing of Britt’s daughter back then – so sorry to hear it’s returned. My mom just last fall was told to basically go home and die from her cancer by a top-rated UCI surgeon. They didn’t even give her weeks or months – they said any day. Said surgery couldn’t be done safely and that chemo wouldn’t likely do anything or if it did would only reduce a small amount. From man’s perspective all was hopeless.
But just as you know, man’s wisdom is man’s wisdom. The doctors can only give the medical advice that they know – they’re just men. But God is God! 🙂 My mom took the attitude that “it’s not over til God says it’s over!” – that it wasn’t her place to “give up” just because the doctor said that. I think of how many people would have just come home with such depressing news and gotten their affairs in order and waited to die. That’s what many would do (I myself would have had a bent that direction).
Well, we adopted an attitude of life – did just what you’re doing now: praying. We had others come and lay hands on her, filled the house with praise/worship, listened to teachings on healing (sadly we largely had to go outside the CC world for this…), etc.
My mom chose to do chemo even though the odds weren’t very good. The plan was to evaluate after 3 treatments to see if it was doing anything (but understanding that many more treatments would likely be needed even to really see any noteworthy change).
She did 3 treatments and guess what? Tumors and related fluid mostly were gone (guess 90-95% gone). She’s continued to improve. Although she may still have a small bit of tumor in her, her general health is better than I’ve seen her in probably 6 years or more!
God is still in the miracle business! 🙂
And it ain’t over til God says it’s over.:) What a joy to know that our times are ultimately in His hands (the Lord really spoke to me from Acts 13:36) – and NOT in the hands of a doctor – no matter how “skilled” they may be.
young Trey’s family will be in my prayers
Chris, what a wonderful and uplifting report about your mom! I’m smiling right now!
And you’re absolutely correct, ““it’s not over til God says it’s over!”
The same God who holds the universe together by His hand can certainly sustain the life and health of one precious child. And Daisy Love Merrick is very precious.
Thanks for joining us in prayer for this little girl!
Praying for Joe, Trey’s Grandmother, him and all family members, and Daisy Love and the for the unspoken needs within our PP family…
Michael @ #8 “Trey asked me afterwards, “that’s what you mean when you talk about being a good man isn’t it?” 🙂 children and dogs seem to have uncanny read on peeps.
Steven H @ #19 “Don’t know whether the statement made was by a Republican, Democrate, Libertarian, or Tea Party. Regardless, as a pastor, my job is to illuminate the scripture as best I possibly can and leave politics to the politicians”
I so wish this was a requirement for those who speak from God’s pulpit. I think and feel it is dividing of the Cross of Christ when political viewpoints are presented in a sermon. In discussions i do not have a problem w my pastor presenting his viewpoint, if he acknowledges it is his viewpoint and is aware his words, even in a discussion, is interpreted by several in his flock that it somehow has more of God’s approval than the average layperson.
David H @ #20
“Historically when people are struggling economically, politically, etc. all the end times stuff gets rolled out.”
I am having interesting conversations at the office initiated by colleagues who are not believers but have “heard” about endtime things…asking me as the id’d ‘church person”. If anything it is providing many opportunities to talk about Christ!
BD @ #35 “consistency has never gotten in the way of irrationality ….” on any side or middle of any viewpoint of all things human it seems 😆 and when you gently attempt to point out the inconsistency, oh my, this is when things tend to become rather passionate.
AV @ #36 ” I really have nothing more to say” AV, there is so much more to say and i would be interested in hearing it.
( | o )====+++ @ #5 your description of this milestone in your lifted my spirits and heart G. I find your perspective of experiences filled w light and hope. i am looking forward to seeing your father’s work 🙂
Chris @ #68 “God is still in the miracle business! 🙂 ” AMEN
Continuing in prayer with you.
AV’s comment on Sherrod’s need for accountability? If she is a Believer and if Breitbach is a racist, she has every right to expose him. On the other hand, to assume that those who are politically on the Right (as opposed to ‘Left’) wink at racism is a serious accusation and one that probably will only be quenched by a purging… trouble is how are we going to purge anything political? By definition, all are vested interests looking for power and gathering as big a head count as they can and damn righteousness. Might makes right… someone said that somewhere back there… and maybe makes gravy…
one of my ‘ands’ should have been an ‘are’… FWIW
I’m learning more about the source of the call for Shirley Sherron to apologise & repent.
Here’s a thoughtful commentary by someone who didn’t pull punches at that notion
In RE: the innuendo from the pulpit.
It is completely inappropriate, especially for a pastor, to assume the worst possible explanation for the continuing disaster in the Gulf.
‘Regardless, as a pastor, my job is to illuminate the scripture as best I possibly can and leave politics to the politicians;
This is true.
Although, I think a clairification is needed. There’s a huge difference between mentioning current events in passing during the pastor’s message, versus turning it into a major detour or focus of the message. That’s wrong.
For example, my pastor, during his message, has mentioned prolife, corporate and individual greed, and societal injustice, at various times. But it’s rare.. And it’s never
a focal point — it’s just mentioned in passing.
Forgiveness of sins in a Law and Gospel format is always the focus.
I for one, appreciate the fact you are praying for people with cancer. Your prayers worked for me and I am thankful. God Bless you friend
Joining with the rest in prayer for those with cancer. Since reading Oden’s post earlier, his words have been ringing loudly in my ears and heart. Praying for Trey’s grandma too…
Joe M, please forgive me..I did not add you to my prayer list. Praying..
How’s Trey’s grandma?
About the same,still in ICU.
Trey is holding up well.
From the Truth is Stranger than Fiction department… rumors abound of romance between Benny HInn and Paula White…
Praying Michael…hope the little man is hanging in there.
Dread, LOL…yes, you can’t write fiction any better 🙂
…I’m sure Ol’ “Benny” is laying some hands on sister White…yikes!
But hey, grace them bro! We’re all sinners 😉
In fairness we already had a sad lesson on jumping to conclusions…..
Dread, if you’re referring to TH…yes, agreed.
No actually I was referring to Sherrod… I hope the story is false … I will be more surprised it is.
oh no! Michael is over on the other thread blowing his horn over Calvinism!!
Hey Bryson! Why don’t you get in here and set Michael straight!!!
and while your at it…. can you explain why your wife Debbi Bryson was teaching a mixed [men and women]group at the Shiloh Reunion two weeks ago? Hmmm… I think women teaching men is more problematic than a Clavinist construct……….
1Ti 2:12 And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.
I’m a peace loving Calvinist these days…
Just back online after 3 days away. Praying for all of the above.
Joe, my heart ached for your circumstances. Praying for your son, that as he looks down into the face of his baby, may his eyes be opened to the love his father has for him. God bless your family.
Continuing to pray for little Diasy Love and Trey’s Grandma.
