Trump’s EO Threatens Free Speech…Including Yours…

In response to President Trump’s executive order about social media, we may soon have to shut down comments on this blog.

Under federal and state law we have had liability protection for my opinions and yours because we were classified as a platform under the law.

Now, the president wants to reclassify us as publishers, which would remove liability protections.

This video explains the matter well, the core starts at about the 9 minute mark;

The Phoenix Preacher has survived almost two decades as a viable platform and community.

The community is created by our comment section and the relationships that have been created through it.

Shutting it down because of the petulance of the President is an odious prospect and dangerous to not only this community,but every other social media site online.

Twitter, Facebook, and this blog are privately owned and can do what we damn well please with what we own as long as we observe the current laws of the land.

As I used to say in the early days here, if you don’t like what we do , move on and start your own media.

I would say the same thing to the President…

    I really worry about this. I’ve seen a lot of “oh, this will never stand up in the courts.” But it seems some forget Trump and the GOP Senate have placed hundreds of very conservative judges on the federal bench. So, I do not necessarily have confidence the courts will protect our rights. President Trump is an authoritarian “leader” (if you can call him a leader). He seems to have little to no concern for the Constitution so why would he be concerned about the First Amendment? What he wants is authoritarian control over everything, especially all forms of media, which he refers to as “the enemy of the people.” I think he confuses the media with himself when he uses this term.

    I haven’t read the EO, so don’t know the details (I’ll look later), but if you want to move the site to Australia, I can help.

  4. Michael says:

    Thanks, Eric.
    I’m not sure that would shield me from liability here.

    Various experts say that this EO is not worth or as powerful as the paper it is written on. The more insidious thing is the various efforts in Congress to modify or repeal Section 230. Funny how both Elizabeth Warren and Josh Hawley are both anti Big Tech, anti-Silicon Valley, anti-free speech Luddites. Both Warren and other on TEAM BLUE and Hawley and others on TEAM RED are on the same page of going after Section 230.

    Michael,

    Here are some good articles on the link below regarding Twitter and Section 230:
